Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
Specimens have traditionally been identified with barcode labels to save time when cataloging and storing them. The only requirement was to have a barcode scanner on hand when doing an inventory so that the item may be accurately scanned into a database. This reduces errors, eyestrain and tedious handling of specimens. Saved time and accurate identification makes barcode labeling a must for a lab or repository to operate efficiently.
The latest advancement takes barcode labels a step further by adding Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags integrated into the labels with printed barcodes. Partnered Print Solutions has a patent pending label that can be read through a box of vials. This eliminates the need to wipe ice off samples and scan each one with a barcode scanner. The RFID reader allows a single pass to read full boxes without having to even see the barcode! This means that a box of 81 or even 100 vials may be read while still frozen and sealed in a box. An entire box can be read in the time that a single vial used to take to scan. The reduced handling of specimens in a sealed box makes it faster and easier than ever to take an inventory of specimens.
RFID Label for cryogenic storage
Partnered Print Solutions (PPS) is the only company that has provided partially white and clear labels for cryogenic storage for use in liquid Nitrogen freezers for over two decades. With our proven adhesive and label construction ideally suited for printing and applying labels to previously frozen vials, PPS has labels in use in freezers on six continents.
PPS began researching and developing Radio Frequency tags in 2005 and successfully entered the RFID market in 2008. Freezer labels are much smaller and remain in a more demanding environment than warehouses and libraries, so PPS uses a specialized tag integrated into its already proven label construction. These labels have been proven in temperatures as cold as -196 C inside liquid Nitrogen freezer tanks.
Freezer Grade CryoDecal
Partnered Print Solutions (PPS) introduced a tamper evident cryodecal to seal boxes. 25, 81 or even 100 cryovials are effectively secured in boxes measuring 5”x5”x2” or 5”x5”x3”. This cross-shaped cryodecal wraps around the box and adheres to itself, even in liquid Nitrogen freezers, and does not risk damage to the box.
The freezer grade CryoDecal should be signed and dated on its sealed side with a Sharpie permanent marker. Once applied, a box cannot be opened without the CryoDecal being destroyed or revealing clear evidence of tampering. You may also add a preprinted company logo to aid in identification.
The speed of cycle counts and inventories is dramatically increased now that boxes can be verified at a glance rather than being opened and inspected. Since these cryodecals stick even in freezers, technician safety and speed are increased and fully protect the integrity of specimen collections since removal from the freezer is no longer necessary.
